The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) Ghana celebrated its Golden Jubilee (1969-2019) on October 11th, 2019 under the theme ‘’ 50 years of promoting Democracy and Social Justice’’ at La Palme Royal Beach Hotel. As part of activities to commemorate the anniversary, a forum to discuss the subject of Trade Unions mergers in Ghana and an evening reception to climax the celebration were organized. A panel was composed to explore the issues related to Trade Unions Mergers and the pros and cons of this initiative. The discussants were Professor Akua Britwum of the University of Cape coast, Brother Kwasi Adu Amankwah (General Secretary of ITUC Africa) and Godwill Ntarma (General Secretary of Railway Workers Union).
Since FES Ghana collaborates with Ghanaian partners, representatives of our partner organisations were in attendance to share in the celebration. Apart from our partners, other civil society groups and well-meaning Ghanaians were present at the ceremony. There was also a delegation from the Government of Ghana led by Honorable Frema Osei Opare (chief of staff). Other notable dignitaries who joined in the celebration were: Hon Christoph Strasser (former German Member of parliament) who gave a statement on behalf of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) while Honourable Asiedu Nketia (General Secretary of the NDC) headed the delegation from the NDC. The head of FES Africa Department, Dr. Manfred Öhm offered solidarity message on behalf of FES Headquarters. Lastly, H.E Christoph Retzlaff (German Ambassador to Ghana) and Mr. Burkhardt Hellemann (head of Konrad Adenuaer Stiftung) were all present to commemorate FES Ghana’s Golden Jubilee celebration.
